The Relationship
First thing
that it must be said, is that this paring is canon, part of a BL series, where
both participants in the paring are male. So yeah, it’s canon.
Their relationship is a strange one, but that is also something that makes the
fans love it. In their relationship you can find everything you want and need
to know about them.
Their story begins in a deferent way, they can’t stand each other, but for the love of the same person, they decide to cooperate and slowly begin to befriend each other, till the moment when Misaki has to fight the urge to punch his brother, for breaking Usami’s heart, and that same moment, when Usami sees the true colors of that petulant boy, the colors that make him mend his broken heart and falling in love with Misaki, because he cried for him. Because that means that Misaki cares for him, and probably Usami doesn’t really understand what’s happening, and both are too deep when they find out. But Usami doesn’t fight it, he embraces the emotion and loves Misaki openly, while for most of the time Misaki is in denial, but still, when something happens he worries and admits his love, just to fall in denial again.
Usami decides to fight for his love, and act on the emotions he feels, afraid of losing again someone he loves, and the first time he shows this side is when he thinks Misaki and Toudou (Misaki’s senpai) have something, or at least he thinks Toudou wants Misaki in a romantic way. He there admits that for him Misaki is the one and that he would never let him be taken away by someone else. And while making love to him he says (my favorite quote possibly):
“Misaki. I won’t let anyone else touch you. You should choose me.”
- Junjou Romantica, Volume 1, p.94
The first time when Misaki shows jealousy, he doesn’t even notice he is jealous. But he doesn’t like the fact that Usami’s editor: Aikawa has his keys, and that she is able to come in whenever she wants. Also he doesn’t like the fact that she touches him, and that makes him even more confused, and he tries to avoid Usami touching him, and while watching Aikawa adjusting Usami’s tie he thinks:
"Stop it! No! Don’t touch him! Don’t let her touch you! The only one allowed to touch you is… Touch me! The way you always do! Hurry up!"
- Junjou Romantica, Volume 2, pp. 36-37
He then thinks about it, and how not cool is to act so shoujo, and that leads him to drink and fall asleep hugging Usami’s shrit, and when the later comes back, he can’t resist and he takes him to his room and I suppose there is the best part when Usami tries to explain to Misaki, that Misaki is in love with Usami, and to prove his point, he makes love to him:
Misaki: usa… Usagi-san…
Usami: What?
Misaki: I think… I might …love… you.
Usami: …. Naturally.
- Junjou Romantica, Volume 2, pp. 52 -53
After their lovemaking and a shower, Usami explains why Aikawa has the key to the apartement, and the fact that she is a devil lady, and she is the one asking him to write embarrassing lines that Misaki hates in the BL novels he writes. Misaki changes his mind about the lady.
In the next act there is the second jealousy from the side of the young boy.
But this time he is actually quite aware of it, thanks to the annoying fact
that Isaka knew Usami when he was only ten, while he wasn’t even born
that time.
When Usami points out the fact that Misaki is jealous and that he knows it,
naturally he is there do deny the facts, that is not true and that he should
stop saying embarrassing things like “I love you Misaki” and the
fact that he would make passionate love to him when they are back home to show
him his appreciation for this. The moment they stumble in the apartment Usami
is all over his boyfriend and keeps asking him embarrassing things to which
in the end Misaki answers. End even during the lovemaking the main point is
how both of them would like to know more about each other’s life before
meeting and falling in love. And again Usami is the passionate one who will
not let go.
“Look at me. *kiss* Look at me with that face and mix me all up inside even more.”
- Junjou Romantica, Vol. 3, p. 49
But after everything? Misaki again gets angry with Usami, because he used the whole date and lovemaking as inspiration for his BL novel and Aikawa is really happy about it.
And then it follows is the part in which Usami tries not to be to clingy and Misaki goes to visit his brother and sister in law in Osaka. While Misaki worries about Usami, and in this part is actually shown how much Misaki cares about Akihiko, he defends him in front of his brother when this says that he is a great person, but odd, and then he remembers even others saying similar things about him, but he still doesn’t care, he loves him (well he doesn’t say it like this actually) and we arrive to one of the most touching parts of it, when Misaki calls Usami from the station to tell him he is coming back and doesn’t actually how to tell him that he misses him, and the same Akihiko doesn’t actually know what to say and then, he hears that Misaki is crying and he tells him to stay where he is and to not move, because he is coming to get him, when he does, he makes him go on a train that is just leaving and there comes the most beautiful part ever:
“I won’t give up! Not to Takahiro, not to anyone! I’m not letting you go anywhere!”
“U… Usagi-san? You are acting even stranger than usual. I mean, who’d go all the way to Osaka like this? Seems kinda pointless since I was already on my way home…”
“If I didn’t come to get you… I was afraid we’d be really finished. I’ll talk to Takahiro. About having you stay with me. Never lie to me or put my needs first, ever! You can say whatever you want, be selfish. But there’s just one thing. I don’t understand what a warm family is all about. So you’ll have to teach me how to make one. Well? How about it?”
“Has my brother been telling you weird stuff again?[…] I just don’t want to be a burden to you. That’s the last thing I want. (If I’m going to be the cause of any bad feelings I’d rather hold it and be the one who suffers. Especially when the person is so special to me) So seriously, you don’t have to push yourself if you don’t want to…”
“In that case if you don’t want to be a burden to me, then stay by my side.”
- Junjou Romantica, Vol 3, pp. 97-101
After which they make sweet lovemaking where for the first time Misaki tries
to participate as actively as it’s possible for him. This part holds the
whole feeling of the relationship because it shows how both don’t want
to be alone or burden to each other, and if that means to suffer it’s
ok, just that their special person doesn’t suffer. It shows all the need
they have for each other and the love too.
